Bigwig US wireless carrier Verizon has recently added the Samsung Galaxy S5 Developer Edition - with unlocked bootloader - to its catalog. Samsung had hinted in an April statement that it would release such a Galaxy S5 edition via Verizon.
The availability of the Developer Edition of Samsung's new flagship smartphone from Verizon will enable tweakers and enthusiasts to purchase the handset. However, these enthusiasts either have to be existing Verizon customers or should be willing to come under the Verizon banner.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 Developer Edition from Verizon is available at an up-front cost of $600 for the 16GB black version of the handset.
Just like the standard Galaxy S5 version, the Developer Edition version of the handset also features a 5.1-inch 1080p screen; a 2.5 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor; a 16-megapixel rear camera; and 2 GB of RAM. The onboard storage capacity of this version has been restricted to 16 GB only, but it can be easily expanded via a micro SD card.
One of the key differences, especially for developers, between the Galaxy S5 Developer Edition and the standard edition is that the Developer Edition handset is the unlocked bootloader, which enables the users to do away with Verizon's bootloader and play around with custom firmware.
